You never truly understand fear until it stares you in the face, making you realize just how scared you are. For some, fears are small—like spiders, snakes, or heights. For others, they are bigger, like losing a loved one or confronting the fragility of life.
Have you ever stopped to reflect on the fears you’ve overcome or the ones that seem conquerable?
On November 30, 2024, one of my deepest fears challenged me head-on. As I stood in an empty apartment I had chosen as a fresh start, I watched everything I owned packed into a box truck. Sitting in the parking lot, I glanced at Google Maps, where the number “18” loomed at the bottom of the screen.
My heart raced as doubts flooded my mind: Am I making the right choice? Am I ready for this? I took a deep breath, knowing that the only way to move forward was with the right mindset—one focused on positivity and resilience.
This was the fear of leaving behind everything I’d ever known.
The fear of driving away from the state where I was born and raised. A state where I had built 26 years of memories. A state I had seen grow and change throughout my life. A state where my family and friends would remain behind as I ventured into the unknown.
I, Dominique Medina, moved to a new state.
Not just any state, but one I had never visited, vacationed in, or even considered before. I was moving to a place where I knew no one, where everything would be unfamiliar, and where I had no clear expectations.
Talking about overcoming fear always sounds easier in theory than in practice. But when you’re confronted with it, you’re put to the ultimate test: Do you face it and move forward, or do you let it stop you?
For me, it all started with a casual decision. I applied for an internal job position, not thinking much of it. Yet, that single choice changed the trajectory of my life in just one month. All the plans and dreams I was building in Colorado were suddenly halted by an offer letter for a job in Nashville, Tennessee.
My fear of leaving the only state I’d ever called home became my reality. Now I must start a new life in a state where I don’t know anything. I must conquer my fears and experience a new way of living. This is to moving forward in a positive direction.
